Running from 28th May till 6th June, ARTSPLIT is proud to present works by South African artists Irma Stern (1894–1966) and William Kentridge (b. 1955) for auction, via the platform’s app.

Renowned for her work in portraiture, vastly inspired by German expressionists, ARTSPLIT will offer a watercolour work by Stern, titled Harvesters; 1961, 46 x 32cm. The work will be up for Split auctioning with prices starting from $0.15 of the 50,000 units will be available.

Irma Stern, Harvesters; 1961

Painted in the latter stages of her illustrious career, the work features three loosely drawn figures, dressed in brightly coloured clothing, presumably carrying straw. The figures are offset against a vague light brown background, liberated from specific structure. A departure from her more intricate style of portraiture which captures subtle facial details and expressions, the work is afforded a quality of expansive spaciousness.

The second work available in the ongoing auction is Studies for Sculpture; charcoal, pastel and pencil; 100 x 70.5cm; year unknown by William Jo Kentridge. With a highly expressive drawing style, the work features a series of ambiguous figures, which frame the focal point of the piece, in the central bottom half of the canvas. A bust on a stool sits atop a raised platform as a soft pink shaded figure appears to perch on the stool, at an acute angle. A light shade of blue offers contrast to the largely charcoal coloured work, yet a metaphysical presence underscores the work, as the focal point is clearly marked with an outline, perhaps suggesting a sheet of paper, thus creating the illusion of a work inside a work.

Studies for Sculpture is also up for Split auctioning with prices starting from $0.1 with 50,000 units available.

Both works were acquired by ARTSPLIT during the Bonhams African Art auction in October 2021. To take part in the auctions, hurry now to the ARTSPLIT app on the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
